about

Both tunes were noted in 1947 from the family repertoire of Shetland fiddler John Stickle. His ancestor was a German sailor, also a fiddle player, said to have been shipwrecked on Unst in the 1770s. Alternatively, his shipmates threw him overboard for playing tunes like these. Their titles have connections to the supernatural (a Trowie is the Shetland version of a Troll, while the Waterman is a Water Sprite who appears in many Germanic folk tales) which may explain their unearthly rhythms.
